Movies for the Week of May 4th

Ah, 1991. My senior year in high school. I wore flannel shorts and black tights everyday. I filled my days reading Plath and Kafka and filled my nights with some great shows. Bad Brains. Lush. My Bloody Valentine. (I wasn't allowed to see Nirvana when they came to town--it was a schoolnight.). Ah nostalgia!
So of course I want to see:
1991 The Year Punk Broke at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. It plays on Monday May4 at 8:15 pm. See it! If you are not sure, check out this NY Times article to read more about it.

or, if you would rather not indulge in nostalgia, I recommend
Waltz with Bashir at BAM. I haven't seen it yet, but have heard it is amazing. And very sad. There are several screenings Monday, May 4--but the 6:50 screening includes a Q and A with the art director. And I do love those Q and A s.
While you are in the neighborhood, you could have dinner at Thomas Beisl. I've always been intrigued by it--It's right across the street from the theater and they say it's yummy. Goulash...Mmm.

More good stuff this week: Burlesque fun at the Quad Cinema with the documentary A Wink and a Smile and Eric Rohmer's Autumn Tale on Thursday at BAM (the 6:50 screening includes an introduction and book signing by Jonathan Baumbach).

Empty Pockets Alert:
I am completely enchanted with anything Busby Berkeley so I am super-excited about this free screening:
The Gang's All Here at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. (you'll have to click around on the website to get to it). On Tuesday May 5th at 2:30. See it, it's good. And how can you resist anything with Carmen Miranda in it?
