First, a confession: I have never really been a fan of Jarmusch. I just needed to get that off my chest. That being said, I may just pop over to the Angelika to see The Limits of Control. I should probably give it a chance-- and also I sort of like the vibe at the Angelika-- I like the upstairs cafe and the seating in the lobby. And I like their cupcakes. I just have to remember to get my soda downstairs (where they sell overpriced fountain soda), as opposed to upstairs (where they only sell REALLY overpriced soda in nifty glass bottles). To round out the evening, I think a post-film trip to Caffe Falai for their tasty bomboloni is in order.
Other good things to see this week:
One of us! One of us! Gooble gobble, gooble gobble! One of us! One of us! Yep. Tod Browning's Freaks is playing at the Film Forum tonight -- part of a Monday evening Tod Browning series . Definitely a cool series-- each Monday night there are 2 Browning films for the price of one (Freaks is being shown with The Unholy Three) and some of the movies are accompanied by live piano.
Another nice series at the Film Forum is the Con Film Festival featuring bad guys (and girls) from the '30s onwards. I really want to see Ladies They Talk About (which shows Tuesday, 5/12) because Barbara Stanwyck is my wisecracking, pre-code lady hero.
I really do like the Film Forum-- I just wish they had bigger seats. Goodness gracious, those seats are the enemy of womanly hips.
Finally, Mildred Pierce is playing on Thursday 5/14 as part of the Chelsea Cinema Classics. I would see that movie over and over and over again. You know, I discovered Mildred Pierce after discovering that the Sonic Youth song "Mildred Pierce" (from the Goo album) took its name from the movie.
