Movies for the Weekend of June 12

Tomorrow-- a treat you do not want to miss-- Leila is screening at BAM on Saturday at 6 pm. It is one of my favorite movies. I feel very close to the characters in this movie. Very close.
Also playing at BAM is another Youssef Chahine masterpiece Destiny. I've seen it before--and honestly, I didn't quite "get it" at the time--but perhaps it deserves another shot? It's about an Andalusian philosopher, for goodness sake. That should be awesome, no?

And speaking of Egyptian, I present another picture of koshary--that most delicious carb-loaded treat. Topped with fried onions. Yalla!!

The Maysles Cinema is having a Grey Gardens Festival which looks pretty interesting. There will be a book signing, a live cabaret show and a screening of both the movie and the documentary. Cool. I've never seen any of the Grey Gardens related stuff, but I am intrigued by eccentrics and the weirdness that is Long Island--so I'd love to check it out. You know, I did live on Long Island for a time--not in the Hamptons, but in Nassau County. My favorite place in Nassau county was this seafood place called Bigelow's. Cash only, and terrible seating, located in suburban hell-- but damn yummy! Big fat fried ipswich clams. Tartar sauce. Rich clam chowder. Even "The Fiancee" liked it, and he is very picky about his chowder. Chowdah', I should say.

Remember, the Human Rights Watch Film Festival starts this weekend. And here is a New York Times Article about it. There is an excellent selection this year. For this weekend, this Bosnian film Snow seems pretty good.

  1. Where do you get koshary in NYC?

  2. I've had koshary in two places, so far:

Mr. Falafel in Park Slope and Kabob Cafe in Astoria.
